The Tech Facts About Solar Power

Let's talk about some obscure tech facts concerning that ever-popular

, ever-green topic: solar power. How does it work? What's the technology behind it? Why should we care about it? While the former questions can be answered with a series of straight, scientific explanations, the latter is more complicated. Why should you care? That begs the question: should you care? Should you care about the environment? Let's leave that question on the table and address the science of how.

Solar energy is made possible by the use of photovoltaic cells. These are what comprise 99% of all solar panels on the market today. These cells retain the heat of the sun and send said heat to transformers that render the heat back into electricity. So, in essence, you could say solar power is heat power. Initially, these cell were extremely expensive to manufacture and mass-produce.

Photovoltaic cells have been in use for some time. They are the very same cells you see powering road crossing signs, street lamps, and even some stop-lights. Their chief asset is their portability and self-containment. There is no need to dedicate lines of power -- which require extensive digging and planning -- to power these signs. A solar box does all that -- and at no cost or drain on the power grid.

Since the onset of the '73 oil crisis, the search for viable alternative energy sources began in earnest. Though there are a number of viable solutions on the table, few have offered the relative convenience and versatility of solar power cells. Indeed, solar boxes are even being used by marine vehicles, boats, and even buoys to help make the sea lanes more and more navigable.

The rise of these photovoltaic modules is nearly complete. As the hunger for more and more green solutions increases, so too will the demand for solar power. It is the one resource, other than the wind, that is renewable, ever-present and self-sustaining. TO be sure, solar power cells are now being used to power some secondary and tertiary satellite systems. To be sure, the future space exploration will not be possible without solar power.
