The Top 10 Dog Names in America
When we humans name our children, we get exotic. We think of unique, meaningful names that express all of the hopes and dreams we have for our progeny. When we name our dogs, we're apparently a little too preoccupied with life to think of anything distinctive. So we simply borrow names from popular culture and avoid straining our brains too much. Here are the Top 10 Dog Names in America.
1. Buddy
This one is popular in the movies. It goes all the way back to the 1960s with My Dog Buddy. But let's not forget the newer Air Bud movies that had, what, five sequels? Really, what we're thinking when we name our dog Buddy is, "Man's best friend." Not unique. But certainly time-honored.
2. Max
Max just sounds strong, doesn't it? As in Maximus or Maximillian or even Maximum Overdrive. Heck, it could even be the name lent to a designer dog because we've maxed out our credit card purchasing it!
3. Sadie
Sadie has a quaint, folksy sound to it, doesn't it? As in: Sadie Hawkins Day. What you're really saying is that you have a loose dog who doesn't wait for the boy dogs in the neighborhood to ask her outshe is totally available.all the time.
4. Jack
Jack. This is an All-American classic doggy name. We love anything or anyone named Jack, don't we? Jack Nicholson. Jack Kennedy. Jack Black. Jack Daniels. What we're basically saying with this name is, "This is my dog. He's great. But not stellar."
5. Daisy
Daisy is another name that just recalls pleasant memories. Think Daisy Duck. Or a field of daisies. This name is innocence in its purest form. We seem to particularly like to name anything white and/or yellow "Daisy" so if you've got a darker dog, you might want to refer to number 3 above.
6. Lucy
Another great, American name. Lucy Van Pelt of Peanuts. I love Lucy. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Apparently if we name our dog Lucy, we are expecting her to have a biting wit, a fondness for shenanigans, or a penchant for mind-altering drugs.
7. Lady
Lady and the Tramp. A classic. What this name basically saying is, "We didn't want to give ANY thought whatsoever to naming this dog. So we're assigning her gender to her as a name."
8. Charlie
This name also harkens back to good old American memories. Charlie Brown. Charlie Sheen. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Who doesn't love a Charlie? Sure we could spring for something imaginative and creative but why bother with such an old stalwart name as this one around?
9. Rocky
Well we don't have to look very far to figure where this name comes from. I believe there is a law that if you own a boxer, "Rocky" must be listed somewhere in his legal name. Hey, yo, Adrienne.
10. Duke
"Listen here, Pilgrim, if you don't name your dog after me, there's gonna be trouble." Yeah. We love John Wayne. The Duke. Sure, there's the Duke of Earl, Duke Ellington, and the Dukes of Hazzard but The Duke is the greatestwhich pretty much sums up how we feel about our pooches. Even if we can't find the time to think of imaginative names.
