The Truth Behind Liposuction Myths

Because it is still a relatively new cosmetic procedure

, liposuction is often misunderstood and myths abound. This often discourages people from considering the operation because they have negative beliefs or it gives other people unrealistic expectations. For those who believe they want liposuction, they should do their research and become educated and also speak with a doctor. For others who believe it is not for them, they can educate themselves and perhaps be surprised to discover it is a viable option for their situation.

Some of the most common myths surrounding liposuction come from misinformation about its purpose and how it works. For instance, some people believe patients will not gain weight after having liposuction. But liposuction is not a weight-loss solution; it merely contours the body and removes small pockets of fat to alter the body's shape. It in no way prevents re-growth of fat cells, merely removing what is already there. Thus liposuction patients definitely can gain weight after the surgery and should not neglect this aspect of their health.

This answer also applies to the myth that liposuction causes new fat development to increase in non-treated areas of the body. Definitely one of the most common misconceptions of liposuction is that it is a substitute for weight loss from dieting and exercise. But liposuction can only remove small pockets of fat and has none of the health benefits of a healthy lifestyle. It is never a solution to obesity. Neither will it dramatically affect body weight, since only up to 8 pounds can be removed safely at a time.

Another myth is that liposuction can cure cellulite, stretch marks, or sagging skin. It does none of these. It only removes excess fat, and can even cause cellulite or loose skin. Liposuction will also leave scars, but the size and healing time of these will depend on the technique and body area involved.

Liposuction does not have to be performed in a hospital, as some may think. Advanced modern technology has made it possible to perform in a doctors office setting. Stories about hideous scars and death in such settings are virtually non-existent, and it is actually safer to have the surgery in a small office setting rather than a larger hospital where there is more risk of cross-contamination and disease.

Liposuction is not an expensive procedure. Because of recent advancements in its technology, costs have been driven down, and many doctors offer payment plans also. Competition has made liposuction cheaper as well. However, the body area being treated and amount of fat being removed will affect the cost.

Finally, liposuction is not only for women. Men are increasingly looking to refine their bodies and are turning more and more to liposuction. It is a very popular option to improve the male back and abdomen.
