The Unique Beaty Of Ooty

Ooty is a town, a municipality and also the headquarter of the Nilgiri district in Tamil Nadu which is a Southern state of India

. The region also known as Udhagamandalam, Udhagai and Ootacamund simplified to Ooty, is situated around 80 kilometers to the north of the popular Tamil Nadu town, Coimbatore. Serene atmosphere and pleasant weather are what define Ooty and attracts many a tourists. A long time ago, the region of Ooty was constituted of Toda communities and was governed by the Toda tribe which later was passed on to the British Empire who was in control of most parts of India by that time. This was around the end of 18h century AD. Under the British, the region was developed a lot in every aspect. The main earning, nowadays, comes from agriculture, manufacture of medicines and photofilms and of course, tourism. Education is rather advanced in the region with the quality of education imparted having worldwide recognition as one of the best. Rail and road connect Ooty to other parts of the country. Although Ooty has its own railway station, it does not have an airport. Coimbatore International Airport is the airport closest to this region.

Historians have, time and again, come up with different explanations for the name of the region, Ootacamund. The region was referred to as Wotokymund by an unknown correspondent who had addressed a letter to the Madras Gazette in the year 1821. Mund in Tamil meaning toda village explains the latter part of the name and its origin. Another explanation goes that the name Otha-Cal originated from the local language which means Single Stone. Later on, the name mightve gotten polished to Ooty. The Toda tribe was known to worship a sacred stone and this explanation might stand true. But some say that the name Udhagamandalam was simply modified to Ootacamund and later shortened to Ooty.

This town is well known as the Queen of Hill Stations. If you visit the town, you can see the numerous tea plantation spread across the region. Ooty is located in the Nilgiri Hill region best known as the Blue Mountains most probably due to the smoky bluish haze the eucalyptus trees covering the region produce or maybe because of the kurunji flower blooming in this region once in every twelve years. Nobody knows clearly if Ooty was ever ruled by any empire or dynasty. It is known that the Toda and some more tribes occupied the region and coexisted through trade and some other specialized professions. Ootacamund, A History written by the historian Frederick Price states that Old Ooty was occupied by the Toda tribe and given to the Governor of Coimbatore, John Sullivan, through some form of mutual agreement.
