The Unique Fauna Of Australia
Australia is truly a unique and magical place
Australia is truly a unique and magical place. Amongst the splendor of the natural landscapes and rich culture is an exotic wildlife that is truly unique only to Australia. The following are the animals found only in Australia.
The Australian Kangaroo. This is an animal found only in Australia and even within Australia there are as many as sixty recorded species. This animal is a macropod because of its large strong hind legs. As such, the kangaroo moves about in big leaps and bounds. They also have a unique way of caring for their young, in pouches in front of their bellies. These young called joeys remain in the pouch of their mothers until they are able to go about on their own. These beautiful animals are also herbivores, similar to cows, which swallow plants and then chew on the cud to digest the fibers.
The Koala Bear. This is a marsupial that lives in trees, namely the eucalyptus trees, native to Australia. This is not a bear despite its monicker and is not a true bear. While it may be cute in appearance, the koala has large sharp claws to allow it to climb tree trunks. It has two opposable thumbs and one of the few mammals that have fingerprints. It feeds on eucalyptus trees, with sharp incisor teeth at the front to clip the leaves and grinders to which to chew the hardy eucalyptus leaves. Like many marsupials, the koala young are called joeys and live in the pouch of their mothers. As they grow, they climb on their parent's back as it develops the skills to live in Australian arboreal country.
The Tasmanian Devil. This is the only carnivorous marsupial remaining in the country. It is a stout little mammal with solid muscles and sharp teeth used to capture and tear into prey. It has a loud and disturbing shriek and often becomes ferocious when feeding. Its muscular system allows it to have the strongest bite force per unit of body weight in any living mammal in the world. It is an adept predator, able to climb trees and swim rivers but can also be a scavenger. There have been known Devil attacks in the forestlands of Tasmania.
The Platypus. When the first one was discovered, many scientists were dumbfounded with what they found. The platypus has a mouth similar to a duck's bill, webbed feet, lays eggs yet has fur. This animal was declared as a mammal and is only one of five species of mammals in the world that lays eggs instead of giving birth to their young. It is also one of the few mammals packing a venom, a spur on its hind foot exclusively found in males. The platypus has a flat tail similar to a beaver and its fur is waterproof. The animal is the state symbol of New South Wales with its likeness embedded in Australian money.
