The Us Combat Role In Iraq Officially Ends

The good news is that our combat role in Iraq is officially over

. This is wonderful news for our troops who had to serve but many Iraqis are viewing the move with trepidation.

We have finally gotten the action under enough control that we could hand it off to the Iraqi government. Now what they do with it is their concern although they certainly have our support. This is their first opportunity in many years to exert control over their own destiny and the road ahead of them will certainly be rocky.

Many of the Iraqis wanted us out of their country (and I dont blame them). Now they have it and hopefully they will be able to stand in the face of increased opposition from the Taliban. The Taliban see this as the ideal time to cause the government to topple because they are probably at their weakest point. The new government now has to embrace and deal with the reality of the situation and stand on their own two feet. I believe that the new government will survive and will come out of this time of turmoil as a stronger entity. They will certainly be hard pressed and stressed to do it but they have what it takes to prevail.

As far as the United States and NATO are concerned this is the end of a major headache. There have been thousands of lives lost, and billions of dollars wasted in this effort. Maybe it was not thought through well enough from the beginning but after we got into it we could not just cut and run. Now we have gotten untangled from that situation and will be able to focus on some of the more important domestic issues that we need to be able to focus on.

The remaining US forces are there mainly for logistical support but I am sure that there are some in place to assist if combat operations become a necessity however I believe that the Taliban and al-Qaeda have been weakened to the point that they will not be able to overcome the forces organic to the Iraqi government. The Iraqis will have to learn to believe in themselves in order to survive. I think that they will get there once they start seeing actual victories in combat.

As far as the United States and NATO are concerned there were many mistakes and missteps made in this war which should serve to strengthen operations in Afghanistan. Hopefully these lessons can be applied to the war in Afghanistan and serve to assist us in exiting the war there also. If we ever have to fight this kind of war again we will certainly have the expertise to do so. Our troops have been a grind that has lasted for quite a few years. Many of them have served in the Middle East four or five times. Hopefully they will get an opportunity to rest and recuperate.

All branches of the armed forces will take a brief time to recuperate, reload, and retrain for future warfare and the dangers that it will entail. There are situations down the road which will be much different from the situation that they have just endured and they will begin to focus on these types of situations.

We will probably see the development of different types of military equipment. The new equipment will be developed to deal with perceived new threats such as the situation in the South China Sea region of the world with North Korea and China.

Warfare changes and morphs depending on the situation in which it is conducted. We are on the verge of another major shift in the structure and training of our armed forces and the equipment that they use. Military Ring Express
