The use of Lean manufacturing systems has dramatically improved the efficiency of manufacturing throughout the world

. Lean manufacturing is based on the principle that any resource used for anything other than meeting a consumers needs is deemed wasteful. Lean is primarily concerned with trimming down production costs and resource wastage.

Lean principles originate from the practices in the Japanese manufacturing industry, specifically from the practices of the Toyota Production System or TPS. The process of preserving value with less work is the core of lean practices.

The TPS has two fundamental concepts: just-in-time or JIT and autonomation or smart automation. JIT is the method wherein unnecessary inventory is taken out from the production process through setting production response according to the demands of consumers. This also eliminates surplus and carrying costs. Autonomation, on the other hand, basically is automation with human intervention. The human intervention functions only to monitor or supervise, rather than to participate in production.

The JIT concept, which employs the use of the renowned Kanban practice, directly reduces time and resource wastage through requiring only precisely what is needed. Autonomation, meanwhile, helps significantly with labor efficiency.

Lean manufacturing requires Lean-specific education in order to be implemented and used properly. Lean development companies have developed modules to expedite Lean education. The modules cover every aspect of Lean manufacturing and, to improve the learning process, developers have also added Lean games and simulations.

The goal of these Lean games and simulations is to provide an environment where an employee or trainee can practice his or her theoretical knowledge in Lead manufacturing.
