The Wide World of Hand Balancing

When it comes to handstand there are many different ways to go

. Even in the regular handstand there are different ways to hold it.

What's most common today is the gymnastic handstand in which the body is held perfectly straight. This looks good and is easy to hold. It's also great to learn for further advanced stunts. But learning this style of handstand will take longer then others.

Another type of the regular handstand is an arched or curved handstand. This goes by many other names like a banana handstand do to its shape. The back is arched making the legs hang over the handstand more so. This is an easier position to get into then the straight handstand, an contrary to popular belief not going to destroy your back.

In the end it is up to you which style you prefer to go after and use most of the time. Unless you are a competing gymnast I would start of with the natural curved style. But how much you arch is entirely up to you. Of course you should perfect all styles in the end.

Within the handstand you have many other positions you can hold. The legs can move into a straddle, a figure four pattern, scissors and many other. The arms can be positioned differently for a crucifix hold with the arms out wide, a hand-on-hand handstand and many others. These other positions are usually more difficult then the handstand itself but have a wide range from slightly harder to much more difficult.

There is finger balancing. Many people can work up their finger strength in order to be able to support the weight just on the fingers. In fact, hand balancers of the past like Bob Jones were capable of doing fewer fingers. Bob was most famous for his Thumb Stand. There is rumored Shaolin monks capable of on doing a one finger handstand.

There are a wide variety of planching skills. The planche is something like a horizontal handstand. The body is held parallel to the ground with only the hands touching. This requires tremendous whole body strength. Even more advanced is to do pushups in this position.

You have a wide variety of presses which are ways to get into the handstand position. Again these range in difficulty. There are two major groups, those done with straight arms and those done with bent arms. The bent arm presses require a bit more arm strength. The straight leg presses require strength in a different way but also require flexibility. Handstand push ups are one of the bent arm varieties. Once you have the balance you can crank out these in the open.

And if doing a handstand is too easy, you can always remove an arm. The one hand handstand is about a hundred times as difficult to do as the regular handstand. That is what makes it one of the ultimate moves in hand balancing.

Lastly, hand balancing goes right along with gymnastics and tumbling. Also sorts of gymnastic movements including rolling, jumping, diving and much more can be incorporated in moving in and out of these many hand balancing movements.

This short article hasn't covered everything possible, but it will get you started and give you plenty of options in the world of hand balancing.
