The basic tools and equipment needed to get you started with transforming your garden

I bet your tools look a bit healthier after a clean up! Good! Now that's done take a look at what you have got, make a note of what needs repairing or replacing, and then get it done. Repair the damages wherever you can (it is often cheaper to repair than to replace). Replace what you need to, but don't go over the top, many second-hand tools in great condition can be purchased for very little expense (try the local classifieds or free ads, car boot sales etc.). But before you do check the list below for the basic tools you will need to get started, only buy what you will use (not a load of stuff that's just going to rust away through non-use).

Basic Essential Tool Kit

Spade

Rake

Sweeping brush

Gloves

Regular supply of cups of tea (or other appropriate refreshment)

Jungle clearance company (Not really, only joking!)

That's it, that is all you need to get started (that's all I started with), you will be amazed at the type of transformation you can do with just the above tools alone.

A few other tools that will undoubtedly prove useful are listed below. But these are by no means necessary, if you have them it's a bonus, if not I'm sure that with some persistence you'll manage just fine:

Bow saw

Rubble sacks

Secateurs/pruners

Hand trowel

Hand fork

Lawnmower

Many more types of tools and equipment are available but remember we're trying to do this as cheaply as possible, so there really is no need whatsoever to buy the entire contents of the B & Q' or Wilkinson' garden department.

To make it even cheaper try borrowing other peoples tools if you have none of your own, ask Dad' or Grandad' or other relatives or friends (Dads and Granddads - especially Granddads - often have a vast amount of tools or equipment stashed away somewhere that they hardly ever use and so are often a great source of free equipment hire) but - and this is very important - you must return any borrowed items to their rightful owners when you have done with them. Plus have the decency to repair any damages you may have caused to their equipment, and to replace any that get damaged beyond repair or lost; this is rule number 1.

If it is absolutely necessary you can always hire certain equipment - such as a rotary cultivator for example - for usually a sensible fee, but only if it's the only option - get in touch with a few tool and equipment hire companies in your local area, and go for the best deal.
