The brand new group-buying sector in Romania is already maturing with Verticals and Aggregators emerging

In Romania, earlier attempt at daily deal sites were made, with the first one being Ghelir.ro, a site that presented one product per day that you could buy at a special prize, mostly IT and tech products, and ZaZaZoo.ro, another one product per day site, which targeted women but which was not as successful as Ghelir.ro and closed shop early.

Time has come for the Groupon-type sites to reach Romania too. Now we have many players in this country, including sites that are niched - like DealFever.ro. This has also allowed the emergence of a new type of business: sites that present the deal of the day on all these sites, without promoting any business on their own. Such a site is Cuponul.ro.

At the end on 2010, the game was on, as Fundeal.ro was the first group-buying site in Romania, following the recipe that made Groupon.com famous. Later on, sites started popping out: Zumzi.ro, GoldenDeals.ro, Kuponiada.ro, GroupDeals.ro, Pretzometru.ro, E-Redus.ro, Profitam.ro, Group-on.ro (notice the name, interesting, don't you think?), GetADeal.ro, FunkyBiz.ro, RedDeal, DealSide.ro, CoolBuy.ro, WinDeal.ro, DealFever.ro, MegaBuy.ro.

If these sites will be successful, it still to be seen. The business is new, and people are just getting used with this kind of offers. People in Romania are not that used to pay for things online, they tend to be more cautious with the things they purchase online - but they also look for offers, deals and discounts and buy them at once.

Most of these sites are not verticalized. But verticals are very likely to appear. One of these sites that understood that is DealFever.ro, which is a site dedicated to women and which aims to only promote deals for women.

DealFever.ro is also an ally for the battle against breast cancer, donating a percent of their income to organizations that fight for the same cause. This is bringing a new component to the game, showing that sites like this are not only about gains, but are also ready to help others and get involved in social causes.

An interesting thing is how these businesses are promoting themselves. Most of them, before launching the first deal, announce a big contest on their landing page, asking people to subscribe to their database or to "Like" them on Facebook. This is in order for them to have a large enough database to present to clients that are going to offer deals.

DealFever, for example, is giving away an iPhone 4 prior to the launch, by asking people to subscribe and/or "Like" them on Facebook. The Facebook page is also used for communicating with the public and answering all questions.

As rumors about Groupon's arrival in Romania were confirmed, and as LivingSocial is also rumored to soon arrive in this country, it's very interesting to see how the scene will develop. Maybe verticalization is what matters, in which case DealFeaver.ro is ahead of everyone. Maybe the first site that will offer services outside of Romania's Capital City, Bucharest, will also win more. But one thing is clear: this is a successful business and there's a lot at stake.
