The little known Auvergne, deep in France's centre - discover the undiscovered

The Auvergne region is deep in the centre of France and is geographically stunning. Thirty million years ago there was a lot of volcanic activity in the area and as a result of this the landscape is characterised by incredible mountains and gorges. The remains of the volcanoes of days gone by are spectacular and if learning about geology floats your boat then you must not miss a trip to Vulcania, the area's famous theme park where you can learn a lot and have great fun at the same time. Perfect if you've got the children with you.

On the other hand, there is probably no better place in France to find true seclusion than Auvergne. A holiday here is truly an escape from everything that is noisy, man-made and congested. If your idea of holiday heaven is a remote villa in a place that is quiet and natural then look no further. Auvergne may be enormous but its population is tiny by comparison so you will be overawed by a feeling of seclusion and space. A stay in a holiday rental here will give you a taste of a slower pace of life where the simple pleasures are the finest ones. The best thing about a holiday in Auvergne is that although you feel like you are a million miles from civilisation you are in fact easily accessible by rail, road and air, so it won't take you forever to get there.

There is no question that the countryside is spectacular. From the Puy-de-Dome you can view more than eighty domes and craters, and Le Puy-en-Velay is also stunning. However there is more to see and do in Auvergne than just admire the views. There are numerous impressive chateaux which belie a fascinating cultural heritage, or you could go and bask in the warm mineral waters of one of the region's spa towns. However you spend your days, make sure you cook up some local Puy lentils, which originate here, at the end of the day!

If you want to be more active, there are lots of alfresco pursuits to choose from. Auvergne is a great place to enjoy the outdoors, and if you're a rambler then there is no better destination. There are varied walking routes to suit all ages and abilities, all of which wind through the majestic countryside. If you're feeling brave you could take a dip in one of the cool, crisp lakes. More energetic than that would be a spot of mountain climbing, or if you're feeling extremely adventurous then how about paragliding over the hills or white water rafting through one of the many gorges. Whether you stay in a house, a villa, an apartment or a forest cabin you will find no shortage of lovely scenery and exciting activities. Whatever you do during your holiday in Auvergne you will leave feeling revitalised and refreshed.
