The indie movement first came into being with the music scenes of the mid to late 1960's

. The Velvet Underground is generally considered the first band to venture away from the mainstream scene and actually become a hit sensation. Taking control over all the creative processes is generally another reason why an indie clothing store or band seeks to branch out on their own. In a very real sense, it is an artistic pursuit of what they want to do. For instance, no one can feel creative or bring forth new ideas when someone is constantly breathing down their neck, telling them to change this and to change that; it defeats the purpose of being creative and can thwart some great ideas. Everyone from George Lucas to The White Stripes has sought to hold and achieve their dreams under their own powers. In the same sense, artists who create clothing and want to have ultimate control over their indie clothing store are pursuing a traditional form of self-expression.
