Audi has been pushing the envelope when it comes to car design and technology, most recently we have seen the Daytime LED running lights on new Audis and the Audi A7 features a touchpad to operate the on board Multi Media Interface (MMI) system.
Now Audi has announced that the long wheel based Audi A8 model will feature wireless broadband connection, it will feature long-term evolution (LTE) technology. This LTE technology offers data transfer speeds of up to 100Mbps, which is similar to a fixed-line broadband connection. Passengers in the Audi A8 can use LTE internet connection to stream music, watch high definition videos and transfer data. Audi claim that the technology can handle six computers or mobile devices with ease.
Michael Dick, Audi Board Member for Technical Development said, "We will use LTE technology to extend our advantage in automotive networking and further consolidate the Audi connect strategy."
The Audi wireless internet technology has been developed in collaboration with Alcatel-Lucent, the car will use 4G technology which is faster than your typical 3G connection. LTE can also cope with large numbers of users streaming data, even at peak times, because of its extra bandwidth.
Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG Rupert Stadler announced last year that LTE technology would be used by early 2011 in Audi models, true to his word Audi and Alcatel-Lucent have revealed a fully-functioning prototype.
LTE technology offers more dynamic and reliable internet connection, especially when large amounts of data need to be transferred. Audi technicians have tested the capabilities of LTE by streaming high-definition videos - which have notoriously large data streams - live to the prototype Audi A8 in Barnstaple.
