Phillip Island is an attractive weekend and extended holiday spot within easy reach of Melbourne, Australia, the state capital of Victoria. It's about 140 kilometers (90 miles) south east of Melbourne at the entrance to Westernport Bay. It is the home of to a world-recognised Grand Prix Circuit, the Australian MotoGP motorcycle race event, the world famous penguin parade and also the biggest colony of Australian fur seals around the planet.
Many locals live permanently on the island so there is a busy hub of commercial activities. This infrastructure base means visitors can get-away their daily routines for a while without modern amenities and high quality service. You will find an exciting range of activities on offer including fishing, golf, surf, lazy bay beaches, scuba, scenic helicopter jaunts, road or trail cycling, motor-cycling, yachting, wineries, spas, walking, kayak and canoe treks.

The island is large enough to be interesting to explore, with a total area of some 100 square kilometers. Being mostly flat, it is easy to travel around by bicycle or by walking. The highest point (110 metres) is at Cape Woolamai at the south east end of the island. The island has 100 kilometres of exciting but easily accessible coastline.
The north coast facing onto Westernport is home to some mangrove areas that is home to many fish and bird species, including many migratory birds. The best mangroves are protected by the Churchill Island Marine Park, based around the tiny Churchill Island. This islet was named by James Bass & Matthew Flinders during their circumnavigation of Australia in 1798. Today, it is home to a number of small farming properties. Distinctive looking Scottish highland cattle roam its pastures, having been first introduced on the island in 1869 by A D Samuel Amess.
The world famous penguin parade is one of the most well-liked spectacles on the island. At dusk each evening, the cute fairy penguins emerge out of the ocean and waddle up the sandy beach to rest in their burrows dug deep into the beach dunes.
Racing car enthusiasts seeking an adrenalin rush might enjoy the HSV Hot Laps on the Grand Prix circuit or the Go-kart rides on the scaled down replica track of the main circuit.
Phillip Island has one of the largest concentrations of koala bears in Australia. So prolific are these creatures that the island constantly exports koalas to be let loose into the wild throughout other parts of Australia. The headquarters for this activity is the Koala Conservation Centre located in the centre of the island.
