In most cases that move would mean, moving to a big city while simultaneously starting on a high pressure job. Its a common phenomenon that even people who are in the same jobs shift their residences every two or three years. The reasons for this may include the expiry of rental contract, change in roommates, moving into a better neighborhood, marriage, or even the most common one, boredom.

Beyond these, there are the much bigger moves that involve crossing state lines and time zones when you get promoted. Sometimes, relocations happen when you decide to explore a new career option, take a sabbatical or even change location to enjoy a climate more suited to your health. One thing that we all know is that every relocation is a tiring process that involves breaking old ties and forging new ones. The process of shifting home is one which can be made bearable by sorting out the things that you need to get done by creating a simple moving checklist.

The first thing to loom in your mind when it comes to moving is the herculean task of packing all of your belongings. Spending just a couple of years in a home is more than enough to have accumulated boxes worth of possessions. So the first item on your checklist would obviously be to get a large number of boxes. If you are moving across long distances, it makes sense at this point to check out moving services. These services usually sell boxes to you to pack your goods, transport the goods to your new home and even help load the truck with your boxes.

Some of the things that need to be at the top of the checklist should be ensuring to pack a box or bags with the essentials you need to survive for one whole week. Keep this luggage with you while you travel by road or by plane. The rest of your possessions should be packed in a more secure manner. Arrange for transport of these boxes by a long range truck or even in a trailer attached to your car. The other things at the top of your list may be getting your phone connection installed in the new location, transferring your internet connection and cable TV connection.

Another thing that needs to be part of your checklist is to ensure that you dealt with the procedures to terminate the utilities that you been using by clearing all your dues. Ensure that the gas connection, water mains and electricity mains are all closed when you exit your old home.

If you are moving into a smaller location at your new residence, arrange for a yard-sale to dispose of your old furniture. Do the rounds of the neighborhood or call your friends to come over and take a pick of the items that you are leaving behind. Some of them would be happy to take your old possessions to keep memory of you. If there is still useful items left over, take them to the nearest donation center or homeless shelter to benefit the people there. In some cases, it might make sense to hire out some storage space to keep possessions that you might not have space for in your new home but still need to keep. To have an enjoyable moving experience after relocation, involve your family in decorating and furnishing your new house.
