Think About This!
Think About This!
Think About This!
So many of us live extremely busy and complex lives; and, out of what seems to be necessity at the time, do things that are contrary to our own credo. For this reason, it is imperative for us to find that touchstone of Truth. And, as human nature is the product of its own thought process, perhaps we may achieve this goal, or at least set ourselves upon a sound basis to proceed, by thinking...Carefully.
As most of us shall not know life without physical death, it makes sense that every one of us would want to squeeze the most from each day we awaken to. And in turn, end each night feeling satisfied and at ease with our accomplishments. I for one prefer to settle in to sleep at night with the confident knowledge that I had lived well that past day. More than this, satisfied in the feeling that I had indeed earned the next animated contest to come.
This small bit of insight and opinion leads me to that particularly wise proverb of Mr. Benjamin Franklin, which I believe is well known:
"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."
As this quotation is seemingly appreciated, even revered by so many Americans, I do wonder if it is fully comprehended. Since many of those who consider themselves akin to the substance of this quote, are, in reality, the subject of it. One cannot in one breath honor and reiterate a passage, and in the next breath, mock the very essence of it; at least not if one wishes to emulate its sentiment.
To determine the relevance of my postulation, I pose the following question to all of us:
If, in order to secure your family's physical, financial, or educational welfare for an indefinite period of time, you had to contribute to a slight ensnaring of their liberties, as well as your neighbor's, would you? Have you?
We must all remember, in this age of monetary madness and rhetorical manipulation; there are far worse ordeals that may come to pass than hard times...A time when there could be no good ones.
And so, when any of us find ourselves at a juncture where we must work hard for ourselves, without any guarantees, without any benefits outside of what we may provide for ourselves, so that our families and our neighbors may work equally, though perhaps relatively, as hard, but without restraint; then so be it. Moreover, we should do so desirously and without hesitation.
When you consider this carefully, isn't such a life, the only genuine and enduring security that may be had in this precarious and temporary world?
We the people, collectively, must make the inevitable decision as to whether we desire as much security as our government may afford us, or, the dear privilege of life with liberty and the freedom to pursue our individual happiness; as it is not possible to maintain both. Furthermore, such a precipice may exist in areas that do not declare its presence as plainly as others. So let's make certain to think deeply and carefully whenever and wherever decisions are to be made that pertain to our nation, our state, or our hometown community.
