Those who use a credit card for the majority of their Christmas spending need to plan ahead, according to one writer.
In a piece for the Sydney Morning Herald, Bina Brown has advised consumers on a number of ways they can organise themselves for the financial shock that comes hand in hand with the festive season.
She urged Aussie credit card users to think about how quickly they will be able to pay back those debts after the yuletide period, as well as including a few extras that will inevitably crop up.
Ms Brown said: "Factor in a few gifts for people you forget to include or those who unexpectedly give you a gift and you feel you have to reciprocate."
One way in which people can save money by shopping on their credit cards is on the internet by comparing prices quickly with various stores.
"It is not unusual to find items online for a fraction of what you pay in a shop. There are lots of new and second-hand items on eBay," she added.
What's more, Australians looking for a product that is only available overseas will find the exchange rate to be in their favour at the moment and those planning early will have plenty of time to get these products shipped over.
Ms Brown also cited advice from Chris Craggs of the Argurion Financial Group, who stated that one way for people to ensure they do not spend too heavily is to devise a budget before they begin their shop.
He also urged consumers to be honest with their families by letting them know that things are tight financially and they may not be able to receiving a present this year.
