This History Of Scanners

The way that scanners were originally programmed to work was to use frequencies

. These are basically paths that the communications follow. Each channel that a scanner has uses a frequency to communicate. Since every channel has a different frequency it uses, scanners can be programmed to various radio channels to let those who wish to hear what's happening on specific frequencies. In the early days there were only a few frequencies to choose from. Today, there are many.

Early on, if someone wanted to listen to scanners, they had to use a crystal-controlled scanner. These started out with only about four channels and in order for them to work, one had to have a crystal for every channel. Although each quartz crystal needed to listen to every channel only cost about $7, when the scanners came out with up to 20 channels, it became incredibly expensive. Another problem with the crystal scanners was that they were a bit difficult to use. It has been realized that crystal scanners are not a great way to go, which is why the industry has moved on to programmable scanners.

Programmable scanners came about in the late '70's. The beauty and appeal of these devices was that there were no more need for crystals. Instead, these types of scanners could hold frequencies in their own memory. Needless to say, this created quite the excitement around those who knew anything about scanners as it was a whole new way of technology altogether. They now had a keypad which was where the owners were able to program each channel into the memory. This marked the beginning of the new scanner era and has proven to be a wonderful technology as programmable scanners are still what are used to this very day.

Of course, some great tweaks have been made in the past 40 years. These remarkable devices have been made to work with analog trunking capabilities. A trunk radio system basically continually rotates between as many as 29 channels. This means that it can be very difficult to scan such a system and listen to those who are using it. That is where the next form of scanners comes into play. Trunked radio systems are able to scan most trunked radio systems. While they cannot necessarily scan all of them, this is far more useful than the conventional scanner without trunking abilities.

Indeed, scanners tend to become more and more sophisticated as time goes on. It will be interesting to see the direction that is taken with scanning technology in the next 40 years.
