Three Categories Of Multifocal Contact Lenses
Multifocal contact lenses come in several types now
. This kind of contact lenses just means that there is more than one focal point in a single lens. Multifocal contact lenses have three main categories: bifocal lenses, trifocal lenses and progressive lenses. While a bifocal lens has two points of focus, a trifocal lens has a third focal point. Whats more, a newer version of multifocal lenses is progressive lenses, which can not be simply measured by means of focal points. The remaining of this writing describes more details of these three types of multifocal contact lenses.
Bifocal contact lenses are the simplest form of multifocal lenses. As mentioned before, a bifocal lens has two focal points or powers that one for near vision and the other for distance objects. In fact, bifocal contact lenses incorporate two separate lenses, each with their own level of magnification. The wearers can perceive objects at different distances by seeing through different parts. For example, a bifocal lens always offers distance vision at the top part and close vision at the bottom section.
Trifocal contact lenses have three focal points, just as its name suggests. In addition to the near and distance powers provided by a bifocal lens, a trifocal lens makes a further step by offering an intermediate power for a medium viewing distance. The first two powers have no difference from bifocal lenses. But the intermediate part is useful for some tasks that require medium vision. One of the best examples is computer use. Without this third section provided by trifocal lenses, viewing a computer screen can easily cause eyestrain.
The third category of multifocal contacts is progressive lenses, which are increasingly becoming a standard alternative to bifocals and trifocals on the market. Progressive contact lenses are more complex than bifocals and trifocals. A progressive lens may typically contain 20 focal points. But they are almost continually variable across the lens face.
