Three Horse Racing Handicapping Mistakes You Should Never Make

There are a lot of ways to handicap a horse race

, but many of them won't make you any money or pick many winners. While a lot of winning at the horse races is luck, if you don't develop skill at horse racing handicapping, you will eventually lose your bankroll. You should learn good habits and discipline, that goes without saying. Learning good habits means making the right moves. Just as important as good habits, however, are bad habits or mistakes and avoiding them.

1. The first mistake a lot of horse players make is to ignore money management. Money management is the most important part of success at horse racing handicapping, or any kind of gambling. It doesn't matter how good you are at handicapping, if you can't make the right bets and avoid bad bets, then you will eventually lose all your money. That means setting daily limits, writing down your bets, and betting in increments based on the size of your bankroll.

2. Don't Chase your losses. This is another bad move a lot of people make when betting on horses. They start to lose and try to win the money back. The more they lose the more desperate they become and the more they bet and lose. A good analogy would be falling in quick sand. The more you struggle, the faster you sink. If you stop, take some time to gain your composure, you may see a mistake you were making or your bad luck streak may pass.

3. The third mistake that some horseplayers make is believing in some mythical "Law of Averages." There is no such law. Yes, on the average, favorites do win about a third of the races or perhaps a little less, but that doesn't mean that if the favorite lost the last two races, it will win the next. It just doesn't work that way. You have to handicap every race as a separate event, not connected to the last event, other than the fact that it will be run over the same surface and track.

Just avoiding those three horse betting mistakes will help you to preserve your bankroll and win more often.
