Three Questions You Should Ask Before You Create A Website
It seems that today everyone has a website, including your grocer and grandmother
. Long gone are the days when the internet hosted mainly corporate and business websites. Nowadays, more and more private people are creating personal websites and finding a place of their own in cyberspace. But how have they done this? How does one go about creating his or her website?
The first step in any new undertaking in the 21st century is Google-ing. But were you to Google the phrase "website building" you would be bombarded by a barrage of different businesses offering you a quick "how to guide" and the opportunity to host your website on their platform, free of charge.
In order to avoid drowning in this sea of information, your first step should be to ask yourself three simple questions:
1.Why do I want to create a website in the first place? While this may seem like a trivial question, it is an important one as it will help you characterize the website you plan to build. There are many reasons for creating a personal website. Some use it in order to promote their business, others have websites in order to voice their opinions and publish their writings while others hope to promote an agenda and stir public debate. Your website"s appearance, content and language will all be determined by what it is you wish to achieve.
2.Who is my target audience? The goal of a website is to attract as large an audience as possible. In order to do so, the website must seem appealing to its target audience. So, who are you planning to attract to your website? If you are setting up a new business you"re probably hoping to catch the attention of possible investors but if you"re the lead singer of an all-male pop group you might be hoping to widen your devoted fan base. Clearly defining your target audience is an important stepping stone on the road to a popular website.
3.What is the tone of my website? Once you have defined your target audience, you can decide on the tone of your future website. For instance, when attempting to attract investors, one might use words such as "innovative" and "visionary approach" in order to highlight a possible business potential. On the other hand, when attempting to raise public awareness to social issues one might use provocative headlines such as "Why the upcoming elections don"t matter at all".
Once you are done with characterizing your website, you can finally move on to the designing and publishing phase. The truth is that creating a website has never before been so easy as there is an abundance of free design programs and host sites that will be more than happy to take you through the "Do"s and Don"ts" of building a personal website.
However, before you jump into the water, you should keep in mind that your website is just that- yours. So be sure to put some of you into it. Generic websites that lack personality are usually unattractive and fail in achieving the website"s primary goal- attracting an audience.
