Three Ways To Make Your Self-defense Weapon Ineffective
Many non lethal weapons are bought by men and given to their wives
, daughters of girlfriends as gifts. The gift is well intended, but many women, though sometimes scared when out alone, especially at night, prefer to ignore their own security. Women and men think differently.
A woman leaving her home to go to work may review what she has to do that day, what she needs to shop for, what she will prepare in terms of meals for her family. She will not look around the street to see who is watching. When you go for coffee, you'll find most women are quite happy to sit with their backs to the door.
So problem number one for most women is that their own survival isn't uppermost in their minds, until something happens to scare them. The first obstacle for a woman who owns a non-lethal weapon is to remember to carry it. It may work well, but it's not much use in a drawer at home. At first she may feel silly or wonder what people would think if they saw the contents of her bag. If this is a real problem you can buy stun guns which come disguised as other objects such as a cellphone or a flashlight.
There is also little point in having a weapon you don't know how to use. If you have a non-lethal weapon, then read the instructions. Find out how to use it. Work out how and where it will be carried and how, in an emergency, with your brain possibly beginning to panic, you will get it out and use it. Most of these devices have a safety button or catch to prevent accidental discharge. You need to know how to activate the weapon without fumbling and without looking as though you don't know what you are doing.
Many women hope and believe that the mere possession of the weapon will be enough. They hope that if they get it out and activate it the attacker will run away. Research shows that this can happen, but only when the woman handles herself with confidence. Look like a fumbling incompetent and are you just asking to have the weapon knocked out of your hand, or worse still, used against you. As with all things, practice makes perfect.
The final problem most women face is what to do after they have discharged the weapon. The answer is simple - run. Get away. Get in your car and drive off if you can. If your weapon is a taser still attached to the attacker, drop it, you will get a replacement as long as you report the event and send in the police report. There have been cases of women staying at the scene because the taser was so expensive they didn't want to lose it.
Worst of all, there is the woman who stays at the scene to see if the attacker is alright. While this sounds ridiculous, it does happen. Pepper spray can incapacitate an attacker for 20-30 minutes, but a stun gun blast may not last as long and an assailant may recover and be able to do significant harm.
The whole point of the weapon is to keep the owner from harm. Review the instructions, practice use, think about where you will carry it. And if you have to use it, never ever, wait around.
