Antique beds are not meant for three quarter mattresses as well as box springs of today. Most of us just need standard mattress for queen or king size beds, maybe even the old standard, full or double size. This has been done for cabinets for ages. Now we use standard steel rails for either full/double or for three quarter mattress sizes. Just attach them to the headboard using bolts which go right through the headboard. At times there is a piece of wood required for bolting the rails properly. Right at the footboard there a solid steel plate fitted with welded-on bolts is attached. (We never found such plates before and we had to designed and manufacture them.) It is done inside the footboard - nothing is seen from the outside. It allows to attach the steel rails securely, nothing showing outside. Now we can set up the bed and take it down repeatedly just by unscrewing nuts and bolts. If ever these "remade" beds are to be converted to the original size by making use of original wooden rails, steel fittings are removed with no damage to bed. One other advantage of using these bed frames to make up modern beds is the modern level of thickness for springs as well as three quarter mattresses. Many stores sell chunky, thick three quarter mattresses which are too tall as well as hide the beauty of the old headboards. Thinner three quarter mattresses and springs shall be ordered from bed store to be able to see more of the headboard. You just have to measure the distance between steel rails and the desired at the top of three quarter mattress to make sure which thickness ir best, and that is done before you order a new three quarter mattress.
