The temple itself is a structural masterpiece and one of the most recognizable architectural landmarks in the city. Hundreds of both local and foreign visitors frequent this temple on a regular basis as it is regarded as one of the oldest temples in Tianjin. To celebrate the birth of the goddess, local pilgrims have been accustomed to host a fair in Tianjin which is famous for its distinctively festive feel. Some of the main highlights of the palace include the Flag Pole, the Memorial Archway, the Opera Tower, the Temple Gate, the Qisheng Temple, the Main Hall, the Memorial Archway and the Front Hall. The Main Hall which is also the most significant part of the palace was built during the Ming Dynasty. The goddess of this temple, Mazu, is said to have lived in the Meizhou Bay area.

Even as a young girl she is said to have possessed certain godly qualities which attracted the attention of a Taoist priest who then taught her the ways of the religion. As she grew older and her powers grew stronger she began to help those who needed her assistance.
