When you're dealing with updating a countertop, whether it's a kitchen or a bathroom, you can either purchase a new counter or create a custom tile countertop of your own. With custom tile countertops, you can create a very unique look that others don't have, you'll be increasing the value of your counter and you'll have the satisfaction of saving money by doing it yourself.

Pulling out the old counter, or the demo' part of the project, takes a little work but you can get it done yourself. Just be sure to turn off the main water supply below the sink before you disconnect the plumbing. Get a bucket and put it under the S-trap in order to empty the water from the drain pipe, then you can proceed with disassembling the faucet fittings and unscrewing the fasteners that hold the counter to the frame. After removing as many of the fasteners as you can find, try to cut any caulk lines with a razor knife, remove the sink and remove the counter.

Use two layers of " plywood to add bulk to the new counter. You can then either use a mortar base over tar paper, or cut and install backer board. Install backer board to the edges of the plywood too, and cover the edges with fiberglass mesh tape and a thin layer of mortar.

Deciding which kind of tile to use for your tile countertops may be the toughest part of the project. Going with ceramic or porcelain tile or perhaps stone or marble is all up to you. Finding special tiles to adorn the edges or inlays or perhaps the backsplash are great ideas to add some additional custom spice to your project.

Be sure to use the right kind of mortar for your particular tile and also plan to put some extra sealer on the grout following the tiling job. Spending the additional time upfront of properly sealing your tile countertops will pay off big later down the road. When your new countertop is finished, you'll be amazed at the added beauty and functionality that you'll add to the room.
