Time To Prep - Getting Yourself Ready For A Trail Run

For a competitive runner, or someone who does regular long runs

, there are few things that feel better than getting out into the open country air and just running/jogging for hours. It's rewarding, exhilarating and can free your spirit - at least when you're properly prepared with clothing that uses seam sealing tape to keep moisture out and additional supplies for an emergency.

But just about any long trail run can turn into an extended outing when the unexpected occurs. How many times do you leave your home with nothing but a water bottle, some music strapped to your arm and the shirt on your back? Runners - especially long runners - need to strongly consider things like safety in order to make it back home without issues.

Above all other things, you need to make sure you let someone know where you're going and what your plans are for returning, including an expected time frame. As you prep, make sure you put together a number of items to help you be ready for little surprises while running.

Navigation: Sometimes wanderlust takes over. If it hits while you're on a trail run or a long run in the country you may want to explore unseen roads and trails. While this is fine, it's also easy to get lost in your thoughts when you're running. Without fully paying attention, you can get turned around and lost easily. A palm-sized GPS unit or map application on a smartphone can prevent this.


Protection from the sun: Given that you're running a long distance, you're probably not going to want to wear a lot of heavy or long-sleeve clothing which will leave your skin exposed. If you opt to stow your seam seal tape secured waterproof garments, then put on sunscreen to protect your skin.

Pack light: You don't want to make a long run with too much extra weight, but bring a small backpack that fits securely to you. Pack a small flashlight and some spare batteries, lightweight long-sleeve clothing, and some extra pants. Try to get a water proof pack that features high quality seam tape to keep moisture out.


The right clothing: Shorts and a tank are great for running, but they won't protect you from inclement weather. Your best bet is to plan for bad weather by running in waterproof breathable pants - jogging pants or sportswear with seam sealing tape will help keep moisture out while you're running.

First Aid: Make sure you have a few basic first aid items. Even a small scratch can get infected if left unattended. An ace bandage is also important in case you turn an ankle on a trail. It doesn't have to be a large kit - just enough items to fit into a zip lock and throw into your backpack.

Emergency shelter: No one expects you to try to run with a bivy sack, tarp or tent slung over your back. You can however bring a lightweight water proof shell or a safety blanket that is waterproof and seam sealing tape to make sure it stays that way. That way if you end up on an overnight you're protected until the morning.
