Tips And Advice For Buying Dj Equipment
Buying DJ equipment these days can be confusing
. Today's DJ has many options when buying their equipment, and there are a number of decisions a DJ need to make to get the right DJ system for them. To begin with, a DJ needs to decide if they are going to buy traditional equipment with turntables or CD decks and a mixer or a digital DJ system with a laptop and DJ mixer software. These days DJ's can also opt for a DJ controller (discussed later in the article) and DJ software. The purpose of this article is to help DJ's choose the right DJ system and equipment for them.
If you are looking for a traditional setup with turntables or CD decks and a mixer, a DJ system can be expensive. I am not telling you this to discourage you but rather to let you know that high quality equipment can cost a fair amount of money. For this reason, some beginning DJ's are starting "digital" with a laptop and DJ software. Digital DJ's generally use digital music rather than the traditional vinyl or CD's. I recommend starting digital as it is more convenient and less expensive. Remember you can always upgrade to incorporate more traditional equipment such as turntables in the future when you can afford it.
Some DJs don't have any plans to ever incorporate traditional DJ equipment into their sets. These DJ's may invest in a DJ controller, which is a device that replicates certain DJ equipment such as turntables and a mixer. If you get a high quality controller you can use the controller to imitate vinyl "scratching." Or, if you get the right controller and software, you can actually use input devices like turntables or CD decks with the controller and mix with your digital music files.
A big factor in making the decision on the right equipment for you is your budget. You should figure out all of the gear you want in your ideal DJ system and figure out what it will cost. You can then start out with the essential pieces and build your equipment as you are able to afford it. I recommend this planned approach to buying your gear. Otherwise, you might end up with a great high quality mixer, but no headphones, software or music files to work with.
If you are going to use a mixer to DJ, make sure you invest in a quality piece of equipment. Too many DJ's go with an entry level mixer, or a mixer that doesn't have all of the capabilities they need and end up having to spend extra money to upgrade. Make sure your mixer has enough channels to handle all of the input and output devices you plan on using. Even if you don't use the devices now it makes sense to get equipment that will handle what you are going to do in the future.
Headphones can be a DJ's best friend so make sure to buy a good quality set of headphones. Sounds simple, but this is an area where beginners think they can save a few bucks by getting entry level equipment. You need something that is going to allow you to hear the music clearly and that is comfortable enough to wear all night during you set. Take my advice; wait until you can afford a good set of headphones before making a purchase.
If you are going to be a "digital DJ," take the time to find the best DJ software package with the capabilities you need. A good DJ mixer software should be easy to use, should enhance a DJ's performance and skills, and should help beginners learn to DJ more quickly.
