Tips For Maintaining Safe Business Stairwells

Most office buildings and other types of business structures have stairwells or stairs of some kind or another

. Liability insurance, along with positive customer relations, demands that these areas be kept as safe as possible. Too many folks are injured on business-related stairs each and every year, and such mishaps leave you vulnerable to lawsuits. Here are some no-nonsense tips for maintaining safe business stairwells both for the benefit of your customers and your employees.

--Non slip stair treads: This may seem like a no-brainer, but too many businesses make the mistake of overlooking these common-sense and relatively inexpensive safety features. Non-slip treads are not just for exterior stairs either: they are essential to indoor stairwells too. The type of tread you choose will depend on the materials of your stairs, how much daily traffic they get, and visibility within the area of the stairs. For example, if your stairway gets zero natural light, consider getting treads that not only grip but are also reflective. Depending on your needs, you can choose simple strips, or you may prefer an all-over gripper: talk to tread manufacturers to determine exactly what's right for you.

--No more clutter: Too many businesses use seldom-used stairwells as repositories for boxes, books, supplies, and other items that simply don't belong there. Allowing clutter to build up in a stairwell is an invitation for accidental trips, collisions, and falls. Put your stuff in storage where it belongs, and leave stairs for your pedestrian traffic.

--Use the right kind of lighting: No matter how much you keep your stairs clutter-free or how many non slip stair treads you use, accidents will still happen if people can't see where they're going! If you are a business trying to cut down on your energy consumption, install motion-sensitive lighting in enclosed stairwells: this way your pedestrian traffic will have the visibility they need, but the lights will be off when the stairs are not in use.

--Always have handrails: Some people need a little extra help getting up and down stairs, even if they are in excellent health. It just makes good common sense to have handrails on both sides of the stairs that will help prevent accidents.

--Beware of cleaning products: Uncarpeted stairs need to be mopped on a regular basis for cleanliness sake, but that can mean slippery surfaces that may cause a fall. Be sure to use only cleaning products that do not leave a slippery residue: waxing stairs should never be an option. Period.

Responsible business owners take the time to make sure all areas of their property are safe: including stairwells and exterior stairs. Being remiss might invite trouble that could have easily been avoided through some basic preventive measures.
