Tips On How To Bend Steel Tubing

To bend steel tubing, support the pipe's interior or make a sand mandrel

, position the pipe and use any of the following methods: using a ram bender, a rotary bender, or a roll bender.

Bending a steel type requires a special machine to perform the task. You can use 3 methods to bend steel tubing through the use of a: ram bender, rotary bender, or a roll bender. Know how to use each of them.

Support the pipe's interior

Place the pipe over a mandrel to support it and preserve the shape of the pipe while you're bending it. These mandrels are usually of the identical to the interior of the pipe with some accessories at the tip to give support to the pope. After sliding the pipe into the mandrel, position it next to the bending arch. When the pipe is bent, remove the mandrel by a specialized machine extractor that will pull it out.

Make a sand mandrel

If a mandrel is unavailable, improvise and make a sand mandrel. Cover an end of the pipe with duct tape, make up to 10 layers. Place water into the pipe then add sand. Air bubbles should be removed by tapping the tube with a hammer. Continue adding sand until the pipe is filled. Cover the other end of the paper with duct tape, about the same number of layers as the other. Place the pipe on the bender keeping in mind of the pressure inside the pipe.

Position the pipe

Place the pipe in the bending machine, opening the pipe bender all the way by releasing pressure. The pipe has to be set into the grooves at the three contact points.

Using a ram bender

When you use the ram bender, the central bending arch will press onto the pipe forcing it between the contact points. Carefully apply force at the central part then release when the bending process is done.

Using a rotary bender

Position the pipe into the machine. The pipes are fastened by points on the handles and are placed in front of the bending arch. On one of the handles is a flat side that runs flush with the edges. Pull the upper handle onto the bench. These must be squeezed together to pull the pipe tight from the arch to bend the pipe.

Using a roll bender

When using a roll bender, fasten the pipe between the three rolls, making sure that one roll would be across from the other. The central roll is forced between the two wheels when the pressure increases to create a bend. The amount of pressure will determine the degree of bending radius.

In using the bending machine, supervision may be required if you are using it for the first time. Observe safety precautions when handling the machine.
