Tips On Learning To Drive

When choosing a driving school or driving instructor you have to make a few decisions

before you can decide on which type of instructor you will be using.

First you must decide on whether you are going to learn how to drive a manual car or an automatic car.

Manual cars are more difficult to drive for sure but are also more fun as you get to feel the gear-shift and in turn feel the control of the vehicle. People who enjoy sporty cars tend to go with a manual gearbox as the power is more immediate when accelerating.

That said the majority of modern sports cars are made manual and automatic, the porsche 997 for instance has an automatic option.

Automatic is far easier to drive as the gearbox engages the clutch for you so you only have to use two pedals as oppose to three with a manual, meaning you only use your right foot for the accelerator and brake pedals.

With a manual you need to use both feet, your left will be used solely for the clutch pedal and the right for the brake and accelerator. The difficulty comes in trying to find the biting point of the clutch, this is the moment when the clutch engages with the gearbox to move the vehicle.

The next step is to decide what type of vehicle you are going to learn in, a three door hatchback is the most common choice, BSM have just introduced the Fiat 500 to their range of cars which is small and compact making it easier to manouvere.

You may prefer a larger vehicle, maybe a five door for safety reasons. When choosing an instructor make sure you ask what vehicle you will be driving and then familiarise yourself to it, have a look around one and decide whether you feel confident in driving it.

Does it look comfortable? Is it the right size? Does it have good all round vision from inside the cabin?

The next step is would you prefer a male or female instructor? This depends on whether you are male or female yourself. The majority of instructors are male so this may not be a problem for some people but other people may not be able to learn with a male, religion being a factor for some people.

Do you want a well known school or a smaller local school?

With a well known school the chances are you will pay more for your lessons than with a local school, bigger schools are more likely to have bigger overheads so will maybe charge a few pounds extra. With a bigger school you are less likely to be let doen as they will always have cover if your instructer is ill.

A smaller local school would maybe be cheaper and more personal with the added benefit of having the same instructor when you start till when you finish.

All instructors must undergo rigourous training and tests to become a driving instructor so as long as they have their badge then both should be fine.
