Tips On Living Wheat Free
Stop for a second and think what you ate today; probably some kind of cereal for breakfast
, a sandwich for lunch and some kind of fatty meat with baked potatoes for dinner. More than likely you also had a salty snack in between and some sort of confectionary after your lunch or dinner. Thats a pretty normal day food-wise for most people. But now think about all that wheat you put into your body in just the one day. There are massive amounts of wheat in all those meals. Do you actually know that wheat is bad for you? Most people dont. Its common that people think wheat is only bad for those who have a wheat intolerance but the fact is that all human beings are intolerant to wheat. By nature our bodies are just not able to properly digest all that wheat.
I started living wheat free back in January, so its about 11 months now. Was it easy at the start? No. Did it get easier after a while? Yes! Do I feel better, healthier, more active and more alive? You bet I do! You probably ask yourself why I started to live a wheat free life. Well to tell you the truth I just wanted to loose some weight. I didnt feel particularly bad back in the days when wheat was still part of my daily diet. But today I know that I wasnt feeling good at all. I just didnt know that at the time because I didnt know how much better I would feel if I cut out the wheat entirely.
At the beginning it really wasnt easy. I just didnt know what to eat. I felt like there was wheat everywhere. Ive since done some research on the subject and all I came across were the things I shouldnt eat.
But nobody was actually able to tell me what I could eat. So I just used my common sense and looked thoroughly at all the foods that were available. And you know what? There are actually more foods you can eat than foods you cant eat when living wheat free.
Just look at all the amazing fruits and vegetables you can choose from, the big variety of fresh fish and lean meat, all the nuts, beans and seeds and its all really, really healthy stuff too!
So for breakfast I eat a fruit salad with some natural yoghurt. I love apples, pineapples and oranges. But you could also go for other fruits, like strawberries, bananas or kiwis, just to name a few. An omelette can also be a great way to start your day. I always add red peppers and mushrooms. For lunch I mostly make myself a nice fresh salad. The Greek style salad is my favourite. I use iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, red and yellow peppers, black olives and some light feta then drizzle a little olive oil (cold-pressed is best) over it. Then I top it all up with some sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. Its just delicious and it really fills you up and gives you energy to get through the rest of the day.
Instead of having a big meal in the evening time I choose to steam some vegetables. I love carrots, zucchinis and celery. But once again, you can choose any vegetable you like. A great idea as well is to take all those vegetables and make yourself a nice healthy stir fry, add some bean sprouts and bamboo shoots. Grill some chicken or a nice juice steak. You could also put some salmon or any other fish on the barbeque. Or go for king prawns.
I also love chicken. There are so many ways you can prepare a chicken it never gets boring. You can bake a whole chicken in the oven, barbeque some lean chicken breast and serve it with a hot chilli dip or even prepare a delicious chicken curry.
So you see, there is just so much food out there which contains no wheat at all. It just seems difficult in the beginning because were so used to ready meals, sandwiches and fast food (which all contain massive amounts of wheat) that it feels like a big ordeal to actually prepare food out of fresh ingredients.
What is most difficult for people when living wheat free is that they have to give up eating bread. But you know what? That isnt true at all. You can still eat bread, you just have to choose a wheat free bread like for example barely bread.
Another way of enjoying a nice fresh bread is if you bake your own soda bread. Its very easy to do and its absolutely delicious. You need the following ingredients:
450 g rice flour
25 g soft margarine
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cream of tartar
A pinch of salt
250 ml buttermilk
1 large egg
Just mix it all up and then bake it in your bread maker or in the oven just like any other bread. But beware this is a pretty heavy and substantial bread but the taste will no doubt go a very long way.
But what about the snacks you might wonder? Well instead of gluten-based chocolate bars or other confectionary you can go for a fruit salad or a yoghurt. Instead of eating wheat-based salty snacks you could have some popcorn or corn-based tortillas (just be sure to check the packaging to make sure theyre gluten-free). Better yet cut the salty snacks out altogether and swap them for raw carrot and celery sticks. And you know what, its not just a wheat free and healthier option it also tastes a hell lot better you just dont know it yet. Give it a go and youll see yourself.
I would love to hear from other Wheat Free people, with any recipes, tips or tricks for living healthy.
