Tips On Motivation When You Teach English Abroad
So, you are already a teacher of the English language as a foreign language in countries like China
, South Korea or Georgia. Your career path has been set and you love it in so many ways from the good pay and benefits to the great travel opportunities.
However, you are encountering motivation issues where your students are concerned.
Your students appear uninterested in your lessons so much so that their learning potentials are not maximised. This should not be, of course, because your main job is to teach English and to teach it well.
Fortunately, you have numerous ways to motivate and to inspire your students. You will then be able to boost their participation in class and, thus, to maximise their learning potentials. Obviously, your reputation as a great English teacher will also be to your benefit. So, how can you motivate your students? Read on and learn how to make it possible.
Establish Good Teacher-Student Rapport:
Your first job is to establish good teacher-student rapport. This can be achieved in so many ways although it should be noted that good rapport takes a certain amount of time to develop. Keep working at it starting from the first day of classes and you should be good. For example, you can gain the trust and respect of your students by communicating with them on a personal level while in the classroom.
Get to know your students and let them get to know you, too. You should also approach each class session with enthusiasm. Your students will pick up your verbal and non-verbal cues and, hopefully, be infected with your zeal for teaching.
Establish a Supportive Classroom Environment:
When you teach English abroad especially in countries where 'saving face' is important, you should establish a supportive classroom environment. For example, Chinese and South Koreans are highly conscious about their dignity, pride and honour in public so it will not do to insult them in any way inside a classroom.
Besides, studies have shown that learner motivation reaches its peak inside a safe classroom environment. In this case, safe means an environment where students can express their opinions, ask questions and generally feel that they will not run the risk of being rejected, ridiculed and lambasted.
You should strive to encourage and support your students as they learn the English language. Your students will be inspired to do better in their lessons when they know that their teacher will appreciate their efforts.
Establish Appropriate Group Norms:
Establishing and sustaining motivation in students is not just about teacher-student rapport. When you want to teach English abroad in an effective manner, you must also establish good student-to-student rapport. Your job as a teacher also involves establishing group cohesiveness in your students.
At the start of classes for the program, you must take the lead in setting group norms. Your students should be allowed to express their ideas about how students must behave in class both toward their fellow students and teacher. This way, everybody can be held accountable for his actions.
When you have established good rapport and group norms for your classes, you are better able to teach the lessons to your students. Your classroom has the balance between an organised place for studying and a supportive environment for learning. You will find that, indeed, to teach English abroad also means to influence the lives of so many people.
