Tips On Organizing Your Personal Book Collection

Books throughout history have played a big role in the world

. The take us to faraway lands, tell us stories, teach us, and allow us the chance to gain greater perspective on anything we wish.

What better way to spend a cold evening than curled up with a good book or flipping through a recent edition of your favorite classic? Due to the importance of books in our lives it is key to have at least a few books available on the shelves at home.

For the book enthusiast it may be a priority to have their own personal library. Remember that no matter how small or large the amount of books that you own is, you should always be able to maintain organization.

So how do you go about limiting or increasing the amount while keeping your books displayed nicely and maintaining organization? And how do you dispose of the books you no longer need? The following are some ideas that may help you address these issues.

Go through all your books. Gather them all together and take the time to flip through them. Then, take an inventory of what you have.

If your book collection is feeling cluttered take the time to get rid of books that you don't need. There are two ways that you can dispose of your books: either sell them or give them away.

One of the best ways to dispose of unwanted books is to donate them. If you are donating books, libraries are usually quite willing to accept new books to put into circulation. You may also want to try churches, women's shelters, or goodwill.

If you have kids books that need a new home you could try a pre-school or daycare. If your books are collector's items you may want to consider donating to a museum. Donating to a museum is always a good idea because they will know how to properly care for your books.

You can sell your books at either a garage sale or online on various websites that specialize in selling items. If they are collector's items you may wish to have them appraised and sell them at an auction.

You may want to get rid of books if you have more than one copy, it is not in good condition, or you no longer have interest in the book. After seeing what books you have, take the time to group your books according to subject or categories.

These may include organizing all your books into various categories including reference, travel, fiction, biography, photography, etc. After seeing which categories of books you have then you can decide if you should increase or decrease those amounts. The best way to do that is to determine if these books are useful to you.

After this, you should make an alphabetical list of all the books you own, preferably on the computer. By doing this, when you add a book or get rid of a book you can change your list to account for the modifications.

When you take the time to keep your books organized you will be able to get greater use and enjoyment out of them. Happy reading!
