Tips On Using A Bell To Housebreak A Dog And Stop The Housebreaking Horror

Using a bell to housebreak a dog and stop the housebreak horror is a great way to

guarantee your dogs success. It worked for me and I believe it will work for you.

I decided to use a bell to housebreak my dog after struggling for weeks with my Miniature Dachshund Jack. I felt like I was doing everything I was supposed to, including but not limited to taking him our first thing in the morning and after a meal. But it was two steps forward and three steps back.

I became obsessed with trying to housebreak this dog. I knew that he was smart; he had proven it time and time again in other training sessions. I tried giving him what we call business treats after any successful trip outside. And it worked, he would run out do his thing then run in staring at the counter expecting one. Just when I would think we had the problem solved he would have another accident.

I was at the end of my rope, and not looking forward to spending the next 10 to 15 years cleaning up his business. I was sitting there tormented by what to do when it hit me that maybe a bell would help solve my housebreaking troubles. I thought maybe if there was a simple way for him to communicate his need to go outside

So, I found an old Christmas decoration with a big bell on it. Put a hook in the bottom half of the door, and hung the bell there from a short chain. We call it the business bell.

Now, all I had to do was teach him how, when, and why to ring the business bell. And I did. Things are better for us now and I hope that after following the steps outlined in the rest of this article will help you as well. Good Luck

Just a few tips before you get started.

You have to teach your dog to learn. So it is important to do some basic training with your puppy before trying more advanced training.

Teach your dog the basics and he will not only have better manners because of what he knows, he will have better manners because he knows how to learn.

Step One:

Lead your puppy to the door. Your dog should be paying attention to you, trying to figure out what has to do to get the treat. Bend down ring the bell and say something like "ring the business bell".

At first your dog will probably just dance around trying to figure out what you want him to do, but he will accidentally bump the bell, and when he does say "ring the business bell" and reward him. He will have no idea what he has done at first, but if you keep repeating this step before you know it he will be ringing the bell before you can get the words out of your mouth.

At this point you have successfully completed step one. Pat yourself on the back and have some play time with puppy.

Notes:

To avoid having a dog that thinks the whole purpose of the bell is to tell you when he wants a treat, move on to step two as soon as you think your dog is ready. I think first thing the next morning is the best time to start step two. Because both you and your dog will know for sure that he has business to do.

Step Two:

Lead your puppy to the door with those business treats. Ask your puppy to "ring the business bell" just like before, only this time when he does say good boy and open the door. The door opening is the reward. I still recommend adding a verbal praise like "good boy" just for effect.

Notes:

I continue to repeat the "do business" command once we are outside. Teaching him that I want him to poop or pee when I say "do business" has been a great tool especially when we travel.

Each dog is different some dogs will pick this up quickly and others will take longer. So if your dog does not ring the bell as asked simply take him out for business as usual and try again next time you go out.

Step Three:

Follow Through. Anytime your dog needs to go outside for any reason, lead him to the door and ask him to ring the bell. When I say anytime I mean every time. Going for a walk or going for a ride even if you are just going to take the trash out. If your dog wants the door open he should ring the bell. And when he does lay the praise on thick, let him know how impressed you are.

Step Four:

Listen and one day soon you will be sitting on the couch when you hear the bell ring. He wants' out, and now he knows how to tell you. Success! Get the whole family involved. Things will be much more effective if everyone is asking him to ring the bell when he wants the door open.

So if you need to put an end to your housebreaking horror I recommend using a bell to housebreak any dog, especially for housebreaking a miniature dachshund.
