The other way is the common method of using a search engine to find out whether the said site has been mentioned as having been involved in any scam.

Do not deal with sites that have a lot of banners and links to various other sites. It often indicates that the owner of the site is not as interested in you having a good holiday as he is in getting advertising income through such displays.
