5 Important Swimming Pool Safety Tips

As the spring months approach, you'll want to start spending some time surveying your yard to make sure things are safe and sound before the kids want to start running around outside again. This is especially important if you have a pool in your yard or if you plan to have one installed for use. There are dozens of safety considerations to keep in mind, from hiring a Delaware fence company to enclose your yard to making sure you have the right cleaning chemicals on hand at all time. Here are just a handful of pool safety tips to keep in mind.

Double Fencing

The rules regarding fencing around pools will vary from township to township. Most places require a privacy height fence around the entire yard will the pool will be located. Some towns and insurance companies will require both a fence around the yard and a secondary fence around the pool itself. The greater your exposure to children and pets, the greater your chance of having an accident in or around the pool. Having two fences installed will help you to avoid tragedy.

Add an Outdoor Phone Line

This seems silly, and maybe even a bit extravagant, but having a phone jack installed outside will make it easier for you to answer the phone without leaving the pool unattended. Pool accidents can happen very quickly. If you don't have a portable phone or outside phone jack, make everyone get out of the pool before you go to answer the phone or doorbell.

Make Swimming Classes Mandatory

The children in your household may be excited about the upcoming pool installation, but that type of excitement may quickly fade as younger children realize they don't have the swimming skills they wish they did. Take all of your children down to the local Y for at least one or two swimming classes. They'll learn the basic of flotation and swimming and you'll all feel more confident in the water.

Take a CPR Class

No matter how many precautions you take, you may at some point find yourself facing a pool-side accident. Take a CPR class and learn the basic of first aid. Someone may hit their head in the pool, children may land on each other, or a swimmer may get a cramp while in the water. Would you know what to do if any of these events occurred? Believe it or not, the things you might do in the water are slightly different than what you might do on land especially if you can't get the victim out of the water before beginning treatment. Call your local Red Cross and ask about water-specific first aid courses.

Never Leave the Pool Unattended

Never, ever leave your pool unattended, even if there are other adults around. If you do need to leave the pool area, specifically ask one of the adults present to watch the children in the pool. Never assume they'll automatically begin to do so just because you've walked away. Looking away for a mere minute can mean the difference between life and death in a drowning incident.

Take your time while planning your pool opening or installation for the summer. Your Delaware fence contractor may be able to help you to take care of security around the yard but you'll be responsible for the common sense aspect of the equation. You and you alone get to determine who goes into the pool and when. Use your best judgment and you'll have the safest summer possible!
