Tips for having the correct kit when camping in the mountains. - Part 1

I am sure you will agree with me that there is nothing better than having an adventure up in the mountains

. It provides an opportunity to get away from the rat race and live with nature. Just to spend a few days outside and take in the beautiful landscape is music to the soul. Especially if you are very passionate about what you are doing it can leave a massive sense of achievement within someone.

Unfortunately, there may be negative draw backs to your adventure and these must be attended to before leaving. The weather can change very quickly at an altitude so it is essential to have prepared your kit with the correct equipment. To go up into the mountains unprepared could leave you in all sorts of problems. From hypothermia to having navigation problems.

The first and one of the most important pieces of equipment you need is called a survival blanket. A survival blanket looks like silver foil and when you wrap it around you it keeps you warm. They are an excellent piece of equipment and fit into any pocket or side pocket on your back pack. They are very cheap to purchase but can be a life saver. I can recall being up in the Lake District in Cumbria UK and camping beside Red Tarn at Helvellyn. Being in a mountain valley with a north east wind meant a negative wind chill. I was sharing a tent with my friend and the survival blanket saved him from hypothermia that night. As soon as my friend unwrapped the survival blanket and started to use it, he became warm very quickly.

Today, we live in the age where gps systems have become an essential piece of equipment for any mountain adventurer. They are an excellent tool to use and they do enhance a person's experience. It is still advisable though always to have a basic back up plan in case the system does not work. Another simple but essential piece of equipment is a whistle. It may be very easy to become separated from your group or if you are on your own stranded and the gps system is down. Also, planning is essential in the fact that if you are adventuring on your own always leaves a detailed route plan with someone who is with you but not going on the adventure. The benefit here is if you do have problems and are not back by your planned time they can take action and call for help.

Also make sure that you fully know the route you are taking like the back of your hand. By planning with a basic map and compass to start with it will give the big picture of your route. Basic preparation always makes the difference between a safe successful adventure and possible problems. I am positive that the information provided here will enhance your next mountain adventure. There is a lot more essential kit needed and I will tell you more in the next article.
