A common challenge for many teachers is keeping their students focused in class. After all, many children can become distracted, bored, or confused in a classroom setting, at times abandoning their concentration on a lesson plan. There are various ways teachers can encourage their students to stay focused, while making learning more fun.

However, before applying any tactics to help your students focus, there are a few things you should understand about children and their ability to maintain attention. For instance, as a teacher, you should accept the fact that the younger a child, the shorter his or her attention span will be. In fact, the general rule of thumb for children under seven is that they can usually maintain one minute of attention per year in age. However, this does not mean that a lesson needs to be altered every few minutes; instead, it means that younger children require some form of interaction in order to remain focused. Therefore, younger children should not be given tasks that require little interaction, or which last for long stretches of time. In relation to this, keep in mind that the younger the child, the less time he or she will be able to spend on a task independently. In understanding these simple yet important guidelines on a child's ability to maintain attention, you can more effectively apply focus tactics in your classroom.

Based on a lack of student focus, teachers are sometimes given the impression that their lesson plan is unmotivating or uninteresting to their students. However, the problem might simply be that the students need change and movement. It often helps to alternate quiet activities in class with more active, exciting lessons. Something as simple as changing the pace of your lessons and activities can make all the difference in helping your students stay focused, and ultimately enjoy the lesson you've prepared for them.

Another effective way to help your students focus is to include exercise in some of their classroom activities. Studies have shown that incorporating physical activity into the school day helps children focus, better enabling them to retain information relayed in the classroom. There are many ways that you can get creative with how you include exercise in lessons whether it's by incorporating an outdoor walk into your lesson, or playing active games in the classroom.

Finally, children tend to remain more focused when interactive teaching tools are involved. For instance, an interactive whiteboard in the classroom can help children feel included, and thus stay more focused. What's more, it's an effective teaching tool, helping instructors enhance lesson plans and student learning.

So remember, the slightest change in how you deliver your lesson plans can make a world of difference when it comes to keeping your students focused. Know your students' ability to maintain attention for instance, based on their age group and enhance your lessons accordingly for optimal focus and fun in the classroom.About the Author:
