Tips on Staying Healthy for the Holidays

Christmas is "the most wonderful time of the year" for most people, but getting sick can quickly turn it from joyful to woeful. It will save us time, money, and stress if we better attention to our health and are conscious of the health of those around us. Most of us will be exposed to more people, more stores, be in schools and churches more during this season, so protect yourselves, your families, and others by making just a few simple changes that will help reduce your chances of getting sick.1. Request that everyone entering your home wash their hands; this is especially important if you have anyone living in your home in the risk category for flu. Don't have a community hand towel in the bathroom. Use a stack of washcloths for hand drying and have a basket for them to go into or use a roll of paper towels lined with a bag to easily toss. Remember to sing the entire Happy Birthday song while using soap and warm water to really those hands clean.2. Wear gloves or carry anti-bacterial wipes with you when out shopping. Try to avoid touching cart handles, door handles and the credit/debit card machines that have not been cleaned. 3. If you or your kids are sick do not take go out to the store or anywhere else. Seriously, it is wise to stay out of church, schools, and stores during this time. For all those times that you turned down offers of help, now is the time to say yes. Ask someone to go to the store and get prescriptions or food or anything else you need. And make sure to offer to do it for someone else.4. Clean your light switch plates, remote controls, door knobs, computer keyboards, and phones daily. This can make a big difference. You can use anti-bacterial wipes, plain alcohol and a rag, vinegar, or even plain soap and water. 5. Clean those bathrooms clean! Swish the toilet and swipe the counter tops, door knobs, and faucets handles every day at least once! 6. Wash your pillowcases regularly in hot water. It might be a good idea to skip the fancy pillow shams and super pretty pillowcases during this season. Use the plain ones that can be washed in hot water and do it often, especially if you are sick. And when was the last time your pillows were washed? You can toss them in the dryer on high heat for a few minutes to kill some of the germs. 7. Put a splash of alcohol on toothbrushes and handles and rinse. 8. Elevator buttons (number one is worst button because it is the most used), coffee pot handles, escalator or stair handrails, and shopping carts are the worst culprits for germs. Try to avoid directly touching them or anything you think others may have touched. 9. Do your very best to keep your hands away from your face. Don't rest your face on your hands, wipe your nose with your hand, put your fingers in your mouth (chewing your nails is a sure fire way to deposit germs straight into your mouth), or touch your eyes. 10. keep the right supplies on hand just in case you or one of your loved ones gets sick. Being prepared with tea, tissues, cold meds, soups, and so on can make getting sick a better experience and help you get over your illness quicker. You can not avoid all germs, but you can take some precautions that will help you and others get through the holidays in the best possible condition. And do not worry too much about all of the above! Do your best to be wise and take safety measures, but a cheery smile and good attitude can help keep you healthy too!
