Do you need a builder but don't know where to turn

? If so, these tips for choosing the right builder for your project may help.

1. REFERRALS

If possible, it is a great idea to get referrals from friends and family. I don't mean 'I know a guy' type recommendations, but actual examples of work they've recently been carried out. Ask what the builders were like. Were they reliable? Hard-working? Punctual? Cost-effective?

2. NATIONAL FEDERATION OF BUILDERS (NFB)

The NFB has 14 offices around the country, who can provide you a list of registered building companies in your area.

3. READ REVIEWS

There are a number of places to get reviews, but online business directories could be a great place to start. While you may not want to put your entire faith in what other people say, a general consensus of opinion could prove extremely useful.

4. GET REFERENCES

Once you've engaged a builder, ask for a couple of references from previous customers. If you are able to contact these people, even better. It's also a good idea to ask for photographs of other jobs they've worked on. Or, ask if they've done any other near your home that you can go and have a nosy at!

5. OBTAIN ESTIMATES

Let three or four builders price up the job you have in mind. Some are cheaper than others, but it's up to you how you interpret that. Likewise, don't judge the most expensive too harshly - they may be the best by some distance. Your builders should also tell you if you need planning permission.
