First time you need to do is to remove all furniture. Check the floor thoroughly. If you find any nails and carpet staples, make sure that you remove them all from the floor. Now you can go to a rental shop to rent a sander. This tool is specially made for smoothing a surface with sandpaper. You can use a traditional drum sander.
