VHS tape players, some DVD players and old movie cameras are examples of analog devices. Some of these machines come equipped with both RCA and S-video inputs and outputs. Others come with only one of these types of in and out plugs.

There are many different capture devices, but there are only three different types. An individual can purchase an external firewire component, external USB component or install a PCI card.

People today are so used to the plug and play options with hardware that it may seem strange to find that PCI cards require an individual to install special software. Sometimes the PCI card has the software with it, other times they will not. The software is reasonably priced and often an individual can find a website where they can download it for free.

Some software is limited and only captures the movie data, while other types of more sophisticated software allows an individual to edit the video data. It makes the video editing a lot less difficult if the camera is set to the same resolution as the preferred finished production. By doing this there will be less likelihood that the frames of the video will be in different size format.

If a person is not particularly computer savvy, they may want to opt for a simple video only card. It doesn't cost a lot and it is user friendly. They work well with NTSC and PAL and can be used for web casting. Remarkable results can be obtained when the card has both inputs and outputs.

Fast transfer rates can be obtained with the newer version of some cards. Eight hundred million bytes per second or thirty frames per second are a possible rate.

Now it doesn't take a professional technician to install a PC card but if an individual feels like this is beyond their computer skills or if all the slots are full then an external device may be the answer to this interface problem. That person may choose to purchase an external firewire component or a USB 2.0 device.

If an individual opts for an external device, it will require its own power source. They also are the usual choice in a classroom situation, because they are portable and can be accessed by multiple computers, sometimes simultaneously and other times one at a time.

Multiple connections including RCA, quarter inch, mini plug, midi ports and XLR inputs are available on certain machines. Other converters may only have one type of connection. Choose the component that is applicable.

One other piece of equipment is needed to complete a transfer of data. This inexpensive equipment is called an interface. It comes in the form of a cable with two different ends. Cameras often take a four-pin connection, while most, not all computers require a six-pin connection, so this cable has both.

There are a lot of options for firewire video capture devices, but whatever a person chooses they must make sure to check the computer requirements on the device and choose the one that works with their computer.
