When the minnows are crowded in a tank, they keep bumping into each other and this leads to abrasions and if in warm water, fungus and bacteria will thrive. One can save dozens of minnows that can be sold and the money used to buy the chillers.

If you are storing them in a bucket, ensure that it is free of chlorine dirt and any chemical. Avoid using tap water as it contains chlorine which will harm the minnows. Use water from a clean lake or river and as one changes the water, ensure to keep it the temperature of the previous as a change could cause the minnows to die. In addition, keep them in a cool area.

The aerator helps to keep the minnows alive by injecting oxygen from the air to the water. This is achieved through the pump on the aerator that draws in the oxygen before it is forced through the tubing into the water. In this way the minnows are able to stay alive. The aerator is powered electricity or batteries. The battery power source is considered more convenient if fishing away from an electric power source. The electric aerators are affordable and for those living in remote areas where there is no electricity, there are solar aerators that one can use. At wal - mart one can buy the 120VAC aerator model that is the cheapest of all aerators and is mainly used in the aquariums.

Plants are the main source of food for the minnows and adding a few in the bucket will provide them with food and also protect them from the sun. Covering the bucket with a lid can prolong the life of the minnows and prevent the active minnows from getting out.

Protect the minnows from heat by submerging the bucket in water or keep it under shade. To prevent the temperature of the water from changing rapidly one can use Styrofoam that is effective in keeping the water cool. In addition, one can use ice cubes that are added periodically to the minnow bucket. These cubes can be made from water that has been distilled or from clean lakes, streams or rivers.
