Top Attractions In Muscat

Muscat is both the largest city in and capital of Oman from where the government operates

. Muscat has been an important port city since the first century and has fallen into the hands of people from different places over the centuries. The city is still influential and there are several special things that you can see during your visit, some of which are mentioned in this brief guide.

Mutrah Souk

Mutrah Souk (or market) is one of the biggest attractions in Muscat, not only for the items you can get there but also for its sheer size and the number of interactions between people that take place on a daily basis. One of the things you will notice is the relatively small sizes of the shops, some of which give the impression of stuffed cupboards. The shops stock a wide variety of items, ranging from gold to ceremonial daggers (which are locally known as 'khanja'). You will also find handicrafts from different countries, including India and Afghanistan. The market also features such bulky items as wooden doors. You can enjoy a fruit cocktail as you explore the market and try your bargaining skills as you look for some souvenirs or just for pleasure. The maze of alleyways will give an experience of both the historic and present Muscat at the same time.

Mutrah Corniche

This is a special site to experience the old Muscat, with tiled mosque domes and old buildings with balconies. You will also find souvenir shops. The buildings form a wide arc that starts from Mutrah Fort and goes to the musical fountains overlooking the harbor. The fort was built in the eighteenth century. This is a great place to enjoy the sea breeze, particularly in the evenings. You may take a leisurely stroll that will allow you to explore the area even more closely. You can access the city via the Muscat Gate Museum, which used to be locked every night up to 1970.

Sultan's Palace

While you will not be allowed to enter the palace, you can take a walk around it and see the wonderful architecture used. There is a grand esplanade at the entrance to the palace and a back garden overlooking the sea. The palace is protected by Al-Mirani and Al-Jalali forts, which naturally, are not open to the public.

As you walk along the harbor, take the time to see the graffiti that has been scratched onto the rocks. You will notice that it's actually a special kind of log book that documents the vessels that have docked there for more than two hundred years.

Bait al-Baranda

This is a special museum that was established in 2006 that documents the history of the city, from pre-historic times to the modern age. It is situated in an old villa that has been restored at the end of the corniche. Several exhibitions are also held here from time to time.

You may also visit the Grand Mosque that the Sultan gave to his people as a gift to commemorate his 30th year on the throne.
