Top Importance Housing And Human Population

How do we reduce building costs without sacrificing quality and compliance

? We begin by accepting some very uncomfortable truth;

Our population far exceeds our planets resources and our rate of population growth compounds this crucial imbalance by the minute.

A sustainable Earth can only be achieved when every person accepts and embraces a smaller personal footprint.

The critical element in smaller footprint is a reduced housing size and with that, a global compliance standard that defines (what are) acceptable individual housing area limits. (Given our human inability to co operate/collaborate this isn't a likely scenario, but I think this should be on line one of any housing manifesto and the key point in any global housing conflab). Since the built environment produces almost half of global carbon emissions, a reduced housing size limit is also an important step to reduce climate warming.

Pivotal to this' get small' agenda, is integration of the concept into sustainable housing science; for instance, LEED is utter nonsense when it ignores the obvious 'small imperative' So we begin with an ideological shift...an evolution of our basic value system that rejects the folly of 'big is better' and embraces 'less is more' with a religious zeal. In parallel to this belief system and as a natural consequence of it, is the pursuit of more efficient, functional interior living environments and building methods/systems.

If you've been involved as I have, in the design/architecture 'conversation' over the past decade you can see that this revolution is already underway as communicated in a proliferation of 'small space' design articles, 'tiny house' blogs, and in the physical world of architectural prototypes and Gurgaon Property aimed at mass production prefab designs. A most vivid example is the work of Dr. David Fisher, Dynamic Architecture, as noted earlier in this discussion by Demarr Ward.

As we gain momentum with these ideals, housing becomes a system designed, prefabricated, automated, factory built process whose natural scale efficiencies produce a more affordable housing product.

However, while these positive signs are present, we're still a long way from accepting the fundamental beliefs necessary to accelerate the housing renaissance we must create to survive. We need to communicate the message relentlessly; shout it from rooftops, inject it in all and any housing conversation, and pursue aggressively with governments and business, the conviction that 'the next big thing is SMALL'.

Where does our immediate Affordable Housing mission fit in all of this?

I see it as the primary initiative for public/private funding, justified not for its altruism but rather as the build out of the physical prototype in a project proposed to a government, developer, designer, architect, furniture manufacturer partnership, as the learning curve...the global housing experiment that teaches us how to live SMALL and adapt to the smaller footprint we need to survive as a species.

Viewed in this light, Affordable Housing can shed its torn and tattered, impoverished posture and instead become an exciting new adventure in the evolution of housing for the world.
