Top Tips For A Vacation In New York City

One of my favorite memories of all time comes from the trip to New York City I took with my theatre troupe when I was 16

. The entire thing was educational in more ways than one. Perhaps most importantly, it taught me the best way to approach a getaway to the Big Apple, which I can now share with you.

First off, when you are exploring your options and getting ideas for your vacation, you will most likely be surfing the web. That's stating the obvious, of course, but you need to be careful when booking your hotel. Read real customer reviews carefully, and do your best to find a hotel in a safe neighborhood. My troupe stayed in a few hotels in Midtown Manhattan, and we always felt perfectly safe there.

Staying in a prime location will require a bit more of an investment on your part, but trust me, it's worth it. Every person I have known that stayed in a hostel or tried to find a hotel "on the cheap" regretted it for their entire trip.

Of course, you won't be staying in your hotel throughout the vacation, so one of your best bets in staying safe wherever you go is learning the transportation system as best you can beforehand.

You can, of course, take a private cab everywhere you go, but this will quickly become expensive. You can instead opt for a subway card which will give you unlimited use for a week. Use the internet to help you learn subway or bus routes that will take you where you hope to go (Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden, Times Square, and so on). Make sure the routes you look up are current and up-to-date.

On the subway or bus system, you need to keep valuables out of sight. Be confident and keep your head up. You don't want to be paranoid, but potential criminals are more likely to victimize someone who looks like they won't put up a fight. Keep your purse close to your body or opt for a concealable wallet that hangs around your neck.

It is wise to investigate booking through a travel agency or at least hiring a tour guide. S/he will be able to show you more comprehensive tips to keep you safe as you explore the city, predetermine transportation, and tailor your trip to your interests. They can also negotiate discounts at restaurants and attractions. This is an especially good idea if this is your first trip to the City.
