Tourism In June: The Surprise Of Summer 2011

With the arrival of the winter months come the statistics for the summer period with

the last word on whether or not the claims of restaurants and hotels are correct in saying the economic crisis has taken a toll on their activities.

Let us take Rimini as a case of study. Rimini is one of the most popular touristic cities in the Adriatic Italian coast not only for its beaches but also for the cultural and historical heritage of the towns nearby. It also does not hurt the closeness to amusement parks like Mirabilandia and the over 1000 hotels in the city. From hostels for the youngsters to luxury hotels, there is an alternative for virtually anyone to visit Rimini on their own, in family or in groups.

The total amount of tourists in Rimini the first semester of 2011 has not decreased, but it has changed in the distribution of entrances. The greater volume of visitors still comes during the summer months, but the amount of people arriving out of season is steadily increasing.

From the statistics published by Provincia di Rimini, over 2.5 million tourists have visited Rimini during the first six months of this year. Approximately 1.5 million of them came in the months of June, July and August.

Italians are the most represented group with almost a million arrivals from June to August, while foreign arrivals amount to almost half a million.

The statistics do not consider the month of September, that has lately become a popular month for vacationing due to the good weather that still lasts during the first weeks, the reduced number of tourists and, of course, the last minute offers and out of season promotions that allow to book a holiday at sometimes half the price of what it costs in August. Therefore, the number of tourists that has visited Rimini and that is still imputable to the summer months is probably higher.

Confirmed thus the trend of avoiding the periods of higher prices that have traditionally coincided with the summer months. Growing the number of people travelling in June, especially among tourists coming from abroad, and falling the number of bookings for the month of August for both Italian and foreign visitors. This data confirms the hypothesis presented by Turismo e Finanza who at the beginning of the summer season claimed the prices for hotels and other touristic infrastructures were decreasing significantly in June thus attracting a greater number of clients.

Confirmed the tendency to shorter stays too, specially for the international tourists but also for the national one, that prefers going to a variety of beaches for shorter periods of time rather than booking an apartment for the whole season.

In the whole, tourism in the Riviera Romagnola has indeed felt the effects of the crisis regarding the distribution of touristic flows but volumes have remained higher than the data of 2010. Restaurants and hotels will surely take advantage of this information to continue offering deals during June and September of 2012.
