CORCOVADO
Corcovado, located to the west of Rio, means hunchback in Portuguese. These mountains offer a breathtaking view of the city of Rio as well as the Guanabara Bay. The sculpture of Jesus, known as Christ the Redeemer, is perched on top of these mountains. This sculpture further attracts the tourists to the mountains. The downtown of Rio houses the financial centre of the city, which is the headquarters of some of the leading Brazilian companies. You can visit a couple of exhibitions that are hosted by some of the cultural centres situated in this area, during the weekends. The restaurants and cafes provide the tourists an opportunity to taste the local cuisine and soak in the exotic locales.
HISTORICAL CENTER
The historical churches, like Rio de Janeiro Cathedral and Colonial Cathedral, are a perfect representation of the artistic craftsmanship of the Portuguese colonizers. The Paco Imperial, built during the times when Brazil was a colony of the Portuguese, was the residence of the Portuguese governors. The Historical Center also has some of the leading cinema halls of the twentieth century, most of which have closed down. The National Historical Museum, which also served as the Imperial Palace for the Portuguese, was constructed according to the orders of the Portuguese Emperor, Don Joao VI. Currently, this museum is considered to be one of the best museums that showcase some of the unique American flora and fauna as well as Egyptian mummies that can be traced back to ancient South America. Another place that you must visit here is the garden, referred to as the Passeio Publico, which was built in the eighteenth century.
LAPA
It is one of the neighbourhoods of Rio that is known for its nightlife. There are many discos and bars that hosts samba dance performances, the dance form that has its roots in Brazil. A visit to Rio would be incomplete if you dont watch a live samba performance. The colourful costumes of the dancers, the lively music and the infectious atmosphere of these bars will leave you mesmerized and inspire you to spontaneously shake a leg or two. Carioca Aqueduct, or Arcos da Lapa in Portuguese, exudes an old world charm. It was constructed in the 1780 with the purpose of transporting water drawn from the Carioca River to the several fountains spread all over Rio. Each of the 42 arches are a masterpiece. The long winding streets and the intricate architecture add to the beauty of the place.
TIJUCA FOREST
It is one of the largest urban forests in the world. In the middle of the nineteenth century, this forest was cleared to make way for coffee plantations, which lead to extensive deforestation. When it eventually caused a drastic reduction in rainfall, the government planted several seedlings to restore the ecological balance of the forest. Presently, the forest is home to monkeys and different species of butterflies.
