Tracking A Parcel Now As Routine As Posting A Letter

These days we have access to far more information about this than was ever possible in the past. Thats due to the availability of sophisticated scanning and tracking technology. In millions of instances every day, a parcel is given a unique code by which it can be identified, which means that it can also be used to find out information about the route it is taking, the company to whom it is entrusted, and even the exact vehicle it is travelling on.

This, combined with the speed of so many methods of transport compared with half a century ago traffic jams notwithstanding means that our parcel deliverers can do so much more in the same space of time.

Thats just as well, when they are facing so much more work. But then, this is less of an issue when they can call on computer and satellite technology to help them organise their schedules, and make them more efficient in the process.

Long gone are the days when sending a parcel worldwide meant that it ran a serious risk of never reaching its destination. Today, no matter how large or complex the consignment, each piece of it can be individually tracked, and that information made available for anyone with access to a mobile phone or computer.

Its no longer the case that we just expect a parcel delivery to turn up as and when. Mapping, scheduling and tracking software give courier companies an array of tools through which they can receive and transmit information, and pass on details of any delays a package may encounter on its journey.

Because time is money, having access to this information can save a company or individual valuable resources, because they can plan their schedule around the expected arrival time of a package. Prompt and accurate information equates to good service in the customers eyes, so a delivery company which can provide this will earn a lot of business.

But then, all the technology which this arms race has made available is no use unless it is designed and used with the customer as the first priority. The more user-friendly a tracking system can be, the better.

So when you send a parcel, be sure to ask how your delivery company will let you keep track of its journey. If theyre happy to give you full access to information about its progress, the chances are that the more confident they are that it will be completed with the minimum of fuss.
