Transform Your Shower Into A Spa

Whether you're completely remodeling your bathroom or merely wanting to install a few updates

, you can transform your run-of-the-mill shower into a spa paradise, no matter your budget. If you're ready to invest a lot of money in your health and well-being, you can create the shower of a lifetime. And if you don't have much to spend, you can still add a few features to enhance your quality of life.

One way to make your shower seem less like a daily duty and more like a special treat is to spruce up the entrance. For a small shower, consider a frameless glass door. The glass looks like it's floating, and gives the space an open and exotic feel. Tempered glass in 3/8- or 1/2-inch slabs is a great choice. If you have a large shower, forget the door completely. Instead, look at some shower and bath enclosures that will contain the water but won't pen you in, like a curved tile or acrylic wall or an L-shaped glass wall. You can use serene colors like pearl or azure or go for an ultra modern look with stainless steel or copper. You'll be amazed at the transformation your shower will experience just from replacing the old door or curtain.

Of course, the best (and sometimes easiest) way to boost your shower's potential is to install a quality showerhead. You can get sleek, modern showerheads that offer mist, rain, and even massage options. If you're willing to go all out, create your own shower system with multiple showerheads and sprays mounted on the wall. If you're on a budget, consider installing at least two. The difference will be huge. Another way to maximize your showerhead's potential is to buy one that offers chromatherapy: colored lights from fiber optics and halogen bulbs meant to help you relax. For a truly exotic experience, install a waterfall showerhead. This uses a pump system to immerse you in a "waterfall," reusing the water until you turn it off--at which point a regular shower resumes.

If you want a sauna-like experience, you can install a steam shower unit, which allows you to choose between a normal shower (with massage options) and a steam bath. The shower is completely enclosed with a curved ceiling so that cool water drops that form won't drip on your head and so mold and mildew won't develop in your bathroom. It's a great investment for a relaxation-promoting environment.

Whether you totally renovate your bathroom or just make a few improvements, one thing's for certain: you're going to spend more time in the shower.
